Ernest & Alice Bennett Endowed Scholarship
This fund is established by Dr. Lisa B. Harris, Vice President for Student Affairs, in memory of her parents, Ernest and Alice Bennett. This scholarship honors the legacy that they instilled in their children that the educated person is the better citizen. Ernest Bennett had a great respect for education. He was the only one of the seven siblings in his family to attend college and did so since Ernest was a veteran of World War II and was able to attend college on the GI Bill. While Alice Bennett attained a business certificate out of high school, her brother was a college graduate and she saw how it enriched his life. Both Ernesto and Alice instilled in their 6 children an expectation that they would attend a university. All of them did this, achieving different levels of higher education; three have advanced degrees and made careers in education. This scholarship includes criteria regarding financial need and preference for veterans because, not only was Ernest a veteran, but Ernest and Alice Bennett were both children of WWII. The war greatly affected the course of their lives and instilled in them a belief in service to country and the value of good citizenship.
