Ella Judith James Memorial Scholarship

The Ella Judith James Memorial Scholarship was established in 1992 in honor of the late Judy James. Judy was the first in her family to finish high school. After high school she joined a teacher’s agency and accepted her first teaching job in North Dakota. Unfortunately, the school burned down the year before she arrived so her first classroom was in the living room of the president of the school board. She had 12 students in six grades with no books, so she made up her own course of study. The next year she moved to a two room school with nearly 30 students. She was not only the teacher here but was also the cook and janitor.
